Let me start this blog and the info about the CMS UPSTANDERS by answering a few of the burning questions I have heard you asking. Q. What does it mean to be a CMS Upstander? A. CMS UPSTANDERS are students and staff who wish to stand up for strong, positive, wise choices and for the kind treatment of others. Q. Why do I want to take part? A. Why not??? Also, you can do one or two little things to make CMS an even more awesome place by helping others. Q. What can I do, I am just one person? A. 1+1+1+1 = a few people making a huge impact because our individual actions cause a ripple effect and we are able to impact the lives of many by the choices and actions of a few. Q. Who cares? A. I do, the teachers do, more importantly, the students you help do! Also, on a note for you, being an active part of CMS UPSTANDERS sets a strong foundation for your future choices and volunteerism, which is great when completing job, college and scholarship applications. Q. What will we do? A. Students will come up with ideas they would like to implement around the building in order to make CMS an even better place to be. Examples: the locker notes / quotes, some sort of lunch time activity, other ideas related to promoting kindness and spreading kindness around the building. You will complete an UPSTANDER project application and return it to me with your idea and I will help you figure out the best way to implement that idea and you will then carry out the plan and that will make you a part of the CMS UPSTANDERS! Q. When will we meet? A. For now, we will not have any large group meetings; however, that could change if we figure out a great idea that will need many of us. If we have to have a large group meeting, we will do that during AA. Q. Do I have to do anything outside of the school day? A. No. I want you to practice kindness EVERYWHERE, but you are not going to be required to spend time outside of the school day on UPSTANDERS activies, unless you choose to do so. REMINDER: School work comes before finishing an UPSTANDERS project.
